This paper investigates the architectural evolution of enterprise resource planning (ERP) financial management subsystems. In particular, it traces the transition from conventional dual-ledger structures to unified journal architectures. The Universal Journal concept, along with its consequences for financial data integration, reconciliation, and reporting, as well as the entire organization capability. The analysis of certain academic literature, vendor documentation, technical guides and industry reports relevant to contemporary ERP financial management systems will be adopted. This study compares three deployment models: public cloud SaaS, private cloud, and on-premises. It focuses on configuration flexibility, capability for customization, control over the system, effort for implementation, and responsibility for maintenance. The findings suggest that the use of common journal architectures can mitigate opportunities for data redundancy and the need for reconciliation, as well as contribute to a more timely production of financial reports. Deployment options come with unique trade-offs. The tendency toward requiring rapid implementation, standardization, and limiting infrastructure responsibility militates against public cloud software as a service (SaaS) offerings. Conversely, private cloud and on-premises models provide more flexibility for configurations and customizations, but at the expense of increasing the technical governance and maintenance effort. The paper designs an integrated architecture-deployment framework and decision model to assist organizations in evaluating ERP financial deployment strategies.
