Abstract

Researchers have designed a novel hydrogel that modifies protein delivery. The polymer synthesized from phthalic anhydride and glycerol with acrylic acid crosslinking had a nano-size (~ 68 nm) and pH-sensitive swelling. The authors evaluated the conditions for improved bovine serum albumin (BSA) loading and release from the nano-hydrogel. The performance of the hydrogel was improved under alkaline conditions (pH 8.0) compared to acidic conditions (pH 2.2). The maximum loading and release performance was observed at 6 hrs. A tunable and pH-sensitive system exhibiting pH-responsive swelling and BSA release behavior for drug delivery applications. More research is required to determine how it performs under physiological conditions.
